Today, news came out that the BlackBerry Pearl 8110 is now available in ‘Sandstone with Pink Henna Design’ from AT&T for only $99 on a 2-year contract. This one appeals to the ladies for sure. I have never seen a ’stock’ BlackBerry come out with a design like this… it should sell like hot-cakes.

Now, before you get all excited and start thinking of making next-to-nothing VoIP calls rather than paying over-the-odds mobile rates there’s something to bear in mind. While the 8820 offers 802.11g connectivity there’s no SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) support, unlike other Wi-Fi mobiles – though whether the network has hobbled it or not is another matter.

The UMA protocol is more closely tied in to your mobile network and whether or not you can make VoIP calls will depend on what they are prepared to allow. The network will be in control. Orange has a service called Unique which is compatible. The good thing is that if you do have the facility, the 8820 should be able to switch automatically between Wi-Fi and your GSM network for voice and data.

Another handy feature is the built-in GPS receiver, it turns the phone into a killer navigation device. The 8820’s lack of a built-in camera may displease shutterbugs, but it will likely speed the 8820’s adoption among business users who aren’t allowed camera phones in the workplace.

In our voice tests, the 8820 sounded uniformly loud and clear, though we did hear a slight echo during some calls. The folks at the other end consistently reported that we “sounded great,” and we were impressed by the volume and clarity of the speakerphone. The 8820 also features a 2.5mm jack for corded headsets and Bluetooth 2.0 for the wireless variety.
